Teen Acne Got You Down? Don't Give Up!

When it comes to being a teenager, it’s an exciting time. You’re coming into your own and you’re feeling a little more responsible. But the worst part in all of this is the acne that comes along with it. Your body’s changing which can feel awkward enough. But acne on top of everything?

Ugh.

Teen acne makes you want to run and hide. And it seems to flare up at the worst times. But don’t worry. It’s completely normal and you’re not alone. To understand your acne, you have to understand your body.

Today, we’re going over what causes teen acne, what you can do about it, and our favorite products to stop it in its tracks.

What Causes Teen Acne?

To understand the causes of teen acne, we have to understand a little biology. (Don’t worry, we won’t make it super boring.)

Your body begins to go through changes because of the hormones in your system. These hormones cause you to get taller, grow body hair, and yes, start your period.

But specifically, hormones called androgens cause your oil glands to increase in size and go into overdrive.

This build-up of oil on your skin can block your pores. And once a pore is blocked, it can become inflamed which is what causes your breakouts.

Of course, there are other things that you can do in your everyday life that can prevent breakouts as well.

The Emotional Toll of Teen Acne

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, teen acne can be far more than physical. It can affect your well-being and emotional health as well.

Teen acne has been linked to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and feelings of loneliness. It's also something that may be a source of bullying by peers.

While 85% of teenagers will experience acne at some point in their lives, it can feel incredibly stigmatizing.

It's also been shown that the longer that someone has acne, the longer that it causes a toll on emotional health.

If you identify with this, talk to an adult in your life that you trust.

You're not alone in your feelings. And an adult in your life can help you with the battles you're facing.

We understand your pain. We hope to make you feel empowered in dealing with your acne by the end of this post.

With a few adjustments, you may be well on your way to the clear skin that you've been wanting.

What Can I Do About Teen Acne?

If you’re especially prone to breakouts, it’s important to pay attention to your daily habits. One way to stop oil from blocking your pores is to be mindful of your cleanliness habits.

They could be contributing to the acne that you have.

Don’t touch your face. It may be tempting to pop your pimple, but this can lead to scarring.

Not only that but keeping your hands away from your face can minimize your breakouts. Your hands carry bacteria throughout the day because of what you (and others) are touching.

When you touch your face, you’re putting bacteria on your face which can find its way into your pores. This bacteria, along with your oil, can cause breakouts.

At home, make sure to change your towels and your pillowcases often. Bacteria and oil can live in both. Make sure to toss them in the laundry every 3-4 days and see if that helps with breakouts.

If you’re in any activities that cause you to get sweaty, make sure you shower after and wash your face. Staying active is amazing for your growing body. However sweating can cause your pores to expand, allowing sweat, bacteria, and oil to build up inside of them.

Keep a cleanser in your gym bag so that you’re able to wash your face and body properly.
